These environments are prime locations for illicit activity and adversary coordination, often carried out using communications systems like push-to-talk (PTT) radios, including digital mobile radios (DMR) and other VHF/UHF devices, as well as mobile satellite devices.

These emissions are difficult to detect and often go unobserved by conventional ISR platforms, particularly in remote terrain or denied areas where access is limited or collection is costly. Yet these communications often offer the earliest signals of intent, movement, and coordination. By providing broad, unclassified visibility across large areas in a single pass, space-based RF sensing can reveal significantly more than traditional assets— enabling a more efficient understanding of when, where, and how devices are communicating to inform situational awareness and ISR planning.

HawkEye 360’s Communications Detection & Mapping product suite provides a space-based capability to detect, classify, and geolocate a wide range of radio frequency communications signals. It covers signals such as push-to-talk and digital mobile radio, general VHF and UHF transmissions, and L-band satellite devices.

These signals are collected by HawkEye 360’s constellation of satellites and processed to reveal the presence, location, and context of emitters across the globe. The product helps identify known signals and uncover previously undetected activity, enabling analysts to track behavior over time, map communications networks, and direct ISR assets toward active areas of interest.
